Which cards should I fold in poker?

  • 7 innleggMedlem siden sep. 2020

I'm pretty new to poker, mostly play small stakes online and with friends. I keep losing chips because I call too much with hands that look nice, like suited connectors and face cards. I've tried looking at hand charts but they don't explain why a hand is bad. Which cards should I just fold before the flop? I suspect I'm playing too many hands and want to know where the line is.

Fold everything that isn't a strong pair, a strong ace, or two high cards, unless you're in late position and can see a cheap flop. That's the line you're missing. The charts confuse you because they skip the reasoning, but the reasoning is simple: most hands miss most flops, and the ones that don't are the ones you want to be playing.

Position matters a lot. In early position you fold even more, because you act first and everyone behind you gets to see what you do. In late position you can play a few more hands, but only if the pot is cheap and you're not calling off a big chunk of your stack. The number of players matters too. More players means your hand needs to be stronger, because there are more chances someone else has something good.

The common mistake is falling in love with suited cards and connectors. They hit the flop far less often than you think, and they cost you money over time. A suited 9-7 looks pretty but it's a losing hand against two or three other players. The 80/20 rule is about how a small number of hands produce most of your wins, which is why folding is the most profitable strategy. Tight-aggressive play, folding most hands and betting hard with the few you play, is what wins.

Bad etiquette is slow-rolling or talking about your hand while the hand is still live. The person who shows down first is the one who made the last aggressive action. If you're playing online, use the hand history and a simple preflop chart to check every hand you lost. If you find you're playing more than about 20% of hands, you're playing too many. Live, ask the dealer or a regular to point out your leaks, most casinos have staff who'll help beginners.

The simple version: if it doesn't have an ace, a king, or a pair, fold it from early position. That alone cuts out most of your losing hands. Suited connectors are traps for beginners, they look pretty but they bleed chips.

Roughly 75-80% of hands should be folded preflop. If the hand doesn't contain an ace, a king, or a pair, fold it from early position. That's the whole rule.
