Which crypto should I buy as a beginner?

  • 3 innleggMedlem siden feb. 2023

Just got 10k kr from an inheritance, first real money I've ever had to invest. Zero crypto experience, but a colleague keeps saying XRP is 'the next Bitcoin'. I've seen the 1000x YouTube videos and they scare me more than they help. What should I actually do with this money if I want it to grow over a few years? Give me a straight roadmap, please.

A 10,000 kr portfolio grows by boring rules, not by catching a 1000x coin, so your first move is to ignore the colleague and the YouTube thumbnails entirely. XRP is not the next Bitcoin, it's a settlement token for banks that has already had its run, and anyone calling it that is either repeating a meme or trying to sell you something. The real question isn't which coin, it's which frame you put around the money, because the fees and taxes are where beginners actually lose, not in the price action.

Start with the wallet. Keeping your coins on the exchange is the single most common beginner mistake, because the exchange holds the keys and if it gets hacked or freezes withdrawals, your 10k is gone with no recourse. Move anything you're not actively trading to a cold hardware wallet, the kind that looks like a USB stick, and keep the seed phrase on paper in a drawer. That's not paranoia, that's the difference between owning crypto and renting it.

Then look at the costs. A 0.5% fee per trade sounds small, but if you trade twice a week for a year, that's over 50% of your portfolio gone in fees alone, even if the price doesn't move. The exchanges hide this by wrapping the fee into the spread, so you see '0.25%' but the actual buy price is 2% above market. For a beginner, that means one or two trades a year, not a weekly ritual, and a hold horizon of at least 18 months to make the tax paperwork worth it.

On the Norwegian side, you owe 25.2% capital gains tax on any profit when you sell, declared to Skatteetaten, and most retail traders don't even realise they have a gain to report until the letter arrives. That's not a reason to avoid crypto, it's a reason to keep records from day one and not trade so often that you can't track what you bought and sold.

If you want a concrete split, put 80% in Ethereum, 15% in Bitcoin, and the last 5% in something you find interesting, but treat that 5% as money you're prepared to lose entirely. The boring 95% is what builds wealth over five years, the 5% is the lottery ticket that keeps you from FOMOing into a meme coin with the whole 10k. And whatever you do, don't keep the 5% on the same exchange as the rest, because the moment it spikes you'll be tempted to sell everything and chase it.

The most expensive mistake isn't security, it's letting YouTube set your agenda. No algorithm worth following tells you to catch a 1000x coin, because the one you catch is always the one that got charred, not the one that got built. Ride the institutional rails, don't jump in front of them. And remember the 25.2% tax on gains, declared to Skatteetaten, before you think doubling your money is a win.

Truls nailed the wallet point. I lost 3k on an exchange freeze in 2022, never again. Cold storage is non-negotiable, even for small amounts.

The 5% lottery ticket advice is the best thing in this thread. I put my whole first 10k into a meme coin because of a Reddit post, and it took me two years to break even. Don't be me.

One thing to add: the spread on Norwegian exchanges is worse than the international ones, so compare before you buy. I use a Nordic platform with VASP licensing, and the difference in what you actually receive is noticeable.

Also, don't forget the tax declaration even if you only make 500 kr profit. Skatteetaten has a crypto section now, and it's a five-minute job if you keep a simple spreadsheet from the start.

Thanks, this is clearer than anything I found on YouTube. I'll go with the 80/15/5 split and a hardware wallet, and I'll keep the 5% as my fun money. Appreciate the straight talk, especially about the tax bit.
