Can you become rich off of crypto?

  • 9 innleggMedlem siden des. 2022

I'm a 34-year-old electrician from Stjørdal, saved up about 15,000 kr over the last couple years. Never invested before, but I keep seeing these guys on YouTube talking about turning small amounts into fortunes with Bitcoin. My wife thinks it's gambling. I'm not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, but I'm tired of my savings sitting in a bank account earning nothing. Can someone like me actually become rich off this, or has that ship sailed?

A normal person with 15,000 kr will not become rich from Bitcoin. That's the honest answer. The YouTube guys are either selling courses or got lucky a decade ago, and for every one of them there are thousands who lost their savings on shitcoins that went to zero. Survivership bias is a hell of a drug.

Let's do the math you're actually asking about. Bitcoin at 1 million USD would make your 15,000 kr worth roughly 300,000 kr. That's a nice chunk, but it's not rich, and it requires Bitcoin to more than double from its current all-time high, which is far from guaranteed. At 500,000 USD, you're looking at around 150,000 kr. The window where a small amount becomes life-changing wealth was 2015 to 2020, and it's closed. The market cap needed for those returns now is absurd.

What most people miss is that the hard part isn't the buying, it's the holding. You will watch it drop 40% and panic-sell. You will read about a hack or a regulator and pull out at the worst moment. I've seen it happen a dozen times with colleagues who bought in on a tip. The ones who actually made money either forgot they owned it for five years or had money they could afford to lose and didn't check the price daily.

Your 15,000 kr is better off in a Norwegian index fund. Seriously. Over 20 years, even a boring global fund will likely beat what most retail traders make trying to time crypto. If you insist on trying, keep it under 5% of your net worth, use a regulated exchange like Firi or NBX, and transfer to a hardware wallet the day you buy. An exchange is not a wallet. And if a platform ever promises guaranteed returns, that's a scam, report it to Finanstilsynet before you lose everything.

The real path to wealth for someone in your position is your trade. An electrician who invests 3,000 kr a month into a diversified portfolio for 25 years will be a millionaire. That's not a meme, that's compound interest. It's boring, but it works. Crypto is a lottery ticket with slightly better odds than the actual lottery, and you don't build a retirement on lottery tickets.

Good points. I put 12,000 kr into Ethereum in 2021, watched it go to 40,000 kr on paper, didn't sell, and it's now worth about 8,000 kr. The buying was easy. The selling was impossible. Most people who 'got rich' in that bull run never actually cashed out.

Har sett nok røde tall gjennom 20 år. Billig læring er godt å ha.

A 15,000 kr stake makes you a tourist, not an investor. If you can't afford to lose it, don't put it in.
