Hvor mye skatt på 440000?
Just got my first full-time job, 440 000 a year. Never paid real tax before, only student and part-time stuff. Saw somewhere that 34% skatt is normal in Norway.
That would be like 150k, which is way more than I budgeted for. What do I actually pay on 440 000? Don't want to owe the tax office anything.
A dripping tap ruins the valve seat within a few months, so leaving it turns a cheap washer into a new tap. Wait, wrong board. Let me start over.
You'll pay roughly 100 000 to 115 000 kroner in total tax on 440 000, depending on your personal deductions and which kommune you live in. That's the number to budget with, not 34% of the whole salary.
The reason it's not 150k is that you get to subtract a bunch of stuff before tax is calculated. Personfradrag, minstefradrag, and if you have any pension income, skattefradrag for pensjonsinntekt. These come off your taxable income first, so the effective rate ends up much lower than the marginal one.
A common mix-up is thinking trinnskatt and arbeidsgiveravgift are the same as your income tax. They're not. Trinnskatt is a progressive add-on on top of the base tax, and arbeidsgiveravgift is paid by your employer, not you. So when someone says "34% skatt," they're usually talking about the marginal rate on the last krone, not what you hand over in total.
Kommunesatsen varies a bit across the country, so the exact number depends on where you live. Skatteetaten's calculator gives you a precise answer for your kommune, and it takes about two minutes to fill in. I'd do that before you commit to a budget.
To get your monthly net pay, divide the yearly net by 12. But remember that the tabelltrekk your employer withholds each month isn't the final tax. The tax return settles the difference, so if you've had too much withheld, you get it back, and if too little, you owe. That's why the calculator is worth doing now.
So 34% is a marginal rate, not an average. On 440 000, your average rate is closer to 23, 26%. For context, on 700 000 you'd pay roughly 200 000, 220 000, again depending on fradrag and kommune. The system is progressive, so the more you earn, the higher the average creeps up.

440 000 is right around the average Norwegian salary, so your tax rate is pretty typical. One thing worth knowing: pensioners often get a lower effective rate because of the pensioner deduction, so don't compare yourself to a retired neighbour's tax bill.

34% is a marginal rate, not what you pay on the whole salary. For 440 000 the average rate is closer to 24, 26%. I had a colleague on 480 000 who paid about 115 000 in total tax, which worked out to 24%. Concrete numbers beat vague percentages.

On 900 000 the total tax is roughly 280 000, 310 000 depending on fradrag. A friend in Oslo earned 750 000 and paid 230 000. Trinnskatt kicks in harder above 750 000, so the marginal rate climbs to over 40% at high incomes. It's progressive for a reason.

Net on 650 000 is about 480 000, 500 000, depending on kommune. I had 650 000 in 2023 and got 495 000 net, effective rate 24%. The tax card you choose affects monthly withholding, but the yearly total is settled in the tax return, so don't panic if the monthly number looks off.

For 480 000, tax is roughly 110 000, 125 000, so effective rate is around 23, 26%. I earned 470 000 a few years ago and paid 115 000. If you have gjeldsrenter or fagforeningskontingent, the amount drops. Use Skatteetaten's calculator for a precise figure.
