Which international wallet is best?
Just moved to Spain for work, so my salary lands in euros, but most bills are still in Norwegian kroner. My Norwegian bank charges a fortune in international fees and the exchange rate is brutal. I've read so many scary stories about phone scams and hacked wallets that I'm paranoid. I've looked at Wise, Revolut, Payoneer, and some crypto apps, but I'm overwhelmed. Which international wallet is actually best for someone like me who needs low fees, cross-border use, and protection against scammers who might have my phone number?
Wise is the best international wallet for your situation. You get the mid-market exchange rate with a transparent fee, so no hidden markup eating your salary. It holds euros and kroner at the same time, and you get proper European IBANs for both, so receiving your Spanish salary and paying Norwegian bills costs next to nothing.
I've used it for four years across three countries and the difference versus a Norwegian bank is night and day. The security side is fine for day-to-day money, but you need to understand the limits. A scammer with just your phone number cannot touch your bank account.
They need your PIN, your password, or a verification code, and they only get that code if you hand it over. Never tell a caller your code, ever. If you want to hold crypto, keep it completely separate.
A hot wallet like Exodus can get hacked. The safest crypto wallet is a hardware wallet, Ledger or Trezor, because the private keys never leave the device. If you lose the phone, your crypto stays put.
The biggest mistake people make is taking a photo of the seed phrase or storing it in the cloud. If a scammer gets that, they already own everything. For spending daily money, Wise wins.
For long-term savings, a hardware wallet. And if you ever think you're being scammed, call your bank first, then complain to Finanstilsynet if they won't help.

Wise for daily spending, no question. The exchange rate is real and the fees are small. For crypto, keep it off the phone entirely.
Ledger or Trezor, and never leave anything on an exchange for long. The deciding factor is simple: if you're spending money, Wise. If you're storing crypto, hardware wallet.
The mistake everyone makes is thinking a hot wallet like Exodus is as safe as a cold one. It isn't.

Wise froze my account for six weeks once, after a large transfer from Dubai. They wanted proof of source of funds and I couldn't get it sorted while travelling. Had a backup card with me, or I'd have been stuck. Always keep a second payment method as a fallback.

Disagree slightly with Østkanten about hot wallets being a hard no. For spending money in shops, I found Revolut safer than Wise, because of the virtual disposable cards. Got skimmed in Thailand a few years back, and the scammer only had a card with a zero balance. They tried to use it online within hours, but nothing else was touched.
That said, keep the bulk in your Norwegian bank. A hot wallet is fine for small amounts, but what's the worst that can happen? You're out a night out, not your savings.

Yes, someone can steal crypto, but only if the private key gets exposed. Lost 0.4 BTC myself in 2018, clicked a phishing link while the wallet was hot, and the app drained everything in one transaction. Now I use a Ledger and have never had a problem.
Never take a photo of the seed phrase, never put it in the cloud, never share it with anyone. If a scammer gets that, they own the wallet. And never give out a 2FA code, no matter what the caller claims.
